Measuring waist circumference is important because it provides an indication of the amount of visceral fat- that is the fat closer to vital organs like the heart, liver etc., that a person has, which is a risk factor for several health problems.

Excess abdominal and visceral fat has been linked to an increased risk of type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, and certain types of cancer. In general, men with a waist circumference of over 40 inches (102 cm) and women with a waist circumference of over 35 inches (88 cm) are considered to have increased health risks due to their abdominal fat levels.

Waist circumference is a quick and easy way to assess visceral fat and overall health risk. It is also a useful tool for monitoring changes in body composition over time. Therefore, measuring waist circumference is an important part of routine health checkups and can help individuals take steps to improve their health by adopting a healthy diet and engaging in regular physical activity
